Welcome to Exiles in Pavis
“Pavis, both old and New, is located in the region known as Prax, which is currently under military occupation by the Lunar Empire. Consequently, New Pavis, though filled with all manner of rogues and ne’er-do-wells (aka the player characters) isn’t just some lawless frontier town. The Lunars are attempting to bring some semblance of order to this barbarian settlement … New Pavis is near the ruins of the old and that history, too, plays a part, as cultures and cults maneuver in the background to gain advantage over one another and against the Lunar occupiers. … An entertaining mix of factions and influences, any one of which could easily serve as the basis for many adventures without even taking into account unique aspects of the area, such as the River of Cradles, so named for the cradles of baby giants that have been known to float down its length toward the sea and whose appearance is the occasion for great tumult.”

The Results of the Heroquest:
Porthyr’s Question: How do we reach Orlanth?
Answer: You cannot. Not the old one, anyway.
Amina’s Question: What happened to make the Zola Fel swell again?
Answer: The sacrifice undertaken by the Golden Arrows had a twofold effect: the clan’s protective daimon or “wyter” was promoted to a higher status, and the Pairing Stones have been consecrated as conduits through which sacrifice can pass to affect the local environment.
OK, What Now?
You have discovered [a.k.a. “made”) a story that no one knew before. Zola Fel and Orlanth have a deep history with each other: Zola Fel promised Orlanth’s people that they could travel on his waters, and Orlanth enabled Zola Fel to flow freely towards the homeward ocean. The altar at the Pairing Stones is a place where sacrifices may be offered to maintain this ongoing relationship. The wyter dwelling at this place is a being whom the Golden Arrows used to honour as a representative of their ancestors, but one they now know is an unnamed godling somehow related to the pact that was made in ancient days between Zola Fel and Orlanth. That being’s name and nature are yet to be defined.
Think of this in terms of Biblical history: the temple in Jerusalem (or Sartar) has been desecrated and no sacrifices are offered to the God who made that temple in that kingdom his home. Those who wish to honour God may try to set up a new temple somewhere else and rebuild worship there. Or worship him in their hearts and in sorrowful remembrance of a temple that was destroyed. Or conceive of their traditional god as just one aspect of a deity that lives in every heart and is not swayed by ritual or sacrifice. Or combine traditional mythologies with the myths of the surrounding conquerors. Or discover a secret wisdom that they pass on to a circle of disciples. Each of these historical options was explored. And you could explore all, any, or none of them.
This is what the valley of the Zola Fel looks like, in the north. At its widest, it is deeper than the Grand Canyon and kilometers across.

This is a canon-heavy world. But my decisions are motivated more by the principles of anthropology and mythology. And in the interests of “baring the device” here are those principles:
